Why Hailee Steinfeld Still Hasn't Gotten Her Driver's License Yet

The last time Hailee Steinfeld sat down with Jimmy Fallon, she mentioned that she was nervous about getting her driver's license. But Thursday night, when Fallon requested an update on her driving status, the 17-year-old had a good reason for the delay.

Passenger Threat On Canada Plane Leads To U.S. Fighter Jets Escorting Flight Home

July 25 (Reuters) - Two U.S. F16 fighter jets were scrambled to escort a Panama City-bound flight from Canada back to Toronto on Friday after a man on the plane apparently threatened to blow up the aircraft, authorities said.

Major Julie Roberge of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said the jets flew up to join Sunwing Airlines flight 772 as a "precaution" less than an hour after it took off from Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

Video shot by a passenger showed armed Canadian law enforcement officers shouting "heads down, hands up" as they stormed aboard the aircraft in helmets and tactical gear after it was escorted back to Toronto.

Local media said a 25-year-old Canadian man was arrested on suspicion of threatening the aircraft. Toronto's City News quoted one passenger as saying the suspect became angry after learning that the duty-free items he wanted were not for sale. (Reporting by Daniel Wallis; Editing by Sandra Maler)

This Couple's Response To Pro-Life Protesters Couldn't Be Better

Every Saturday, Grayson and Tina Haver Currin stand outside a women's health clinic in Cary, N.C. holding signs -- but not the kind you'd expect to see outside of a facility where abortions are performed.

While pro-life protesters hold signs that read, "Babies are murdered here" and "Pregnant mothers need support not abortion," the Raleigh, N.C. couple stands beside them holding signs with irreverent messages like, "I like turtles" and "Honk if you're horny."

In death, soccer fan-turned soldier embodies Israeli-Palestinian gap

A Love Letter To Louise Bourgeois, A Feminist Icon Whether She Likes It Or Not

Louis Bourgeois is a feminist art icon, even if she -- in some mythical afterlife populated by giant spiders and contorted, alien figures -- would hate the label. When she was alive, she was aloof on the subject. "Some of my works are, or try to be feminist, and others are not feminist," she proclaimed in an interview with the San Francisco Museum of Art.

"I am lucky to have been brought up by a mother who was a feminist and fortunate enough to have married a husband who was a feminist, and I have raised sons who are feminists," Germaine Greer quoted her as saying in The Guardian, not long after Bourgeois' death in 2010. The artist, famous for her mammoth sculptures of spiders, pointedly leaves herself out of the list, insinuating not a rejection of the -ism, necessarily, but perhaps a bit of condescension toward critics eager to associate her with the term, no matter her opinions.

The two-legged pup was brought to The Downtown Veterinarian in Indianapolis, Indiana, about two weeks ago, Today.com reported. Turbo's owners brought him to the clinic because when he was 4 weeks old his littermates made it difficult for the disabled pooch to get any food. At 1 month old, he weighed just 10 ounces.

HUFFPOLLSTER: Americans Are Pessimistic About Peace In The Middle East

American's views of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict are about the same as they were during a previous conflict 12 years ago. A majority of Americans say no to impeachment, no matter how hard pollsters ask. And once upon a time, Gallup's live interviewers tracked the hairstyles of their respondents. This is HuffPollster for Friday, July 25, 2014.

AMERICA'S OPINIONS ON MIDDLE EAST IN LINE WITH PAST RESPONSES - Jeffrey M. Jones - "Americans are divided in their views of whether Israel's actions against the Palestinian group Hamas is 'mostly justified' or 'mostly unjustified,' but they widely view Hamas' actions as mostly unjustified. Those results are similar to what Gallup measured 12 years ago during another period of heightened Israeli-Palestinian violence, and they are consistent with Americans' generally more positive views of the Israelis than of the Palestinians?.Americans are generally pessimistic about the Israelis and Palestinians being able to settle their differences and live in peace, and while the escalated tensions between the two sides have been a major news story the last two weeks, the American public does not view it as any more serious than past conflicts. Americans continue to exhibit more positivity toward Israel than the Palestinians, but also stop short of saying Israel's actions in the current situation are justified." [Gallup]

With socialism at the end of its historical evolution, the 'left' now lacks a coherent sense of what progress is. Nigerian Government Confirms Ebola Death In City Of Lagos

By Felix Onuah and Tom Miles

ABUJA/GENEVA, July 25 (Reuters) - A Liberian man who died in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos on Friday tested positive for the deadly Ebola virus, Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said.

Patrick Sawyer, a consultant for the Liberian finance ministry in his 40s, collapsed on Sunday after flying into Lagos, a city of 21 million people, and was taken from the airport and put in isolation in a local hospital. Nigeria confirmed earlier on Friday that he had died in quarantine.

"His blood sample was taken to the advance laboratory at the Lagos university teaching hospital, which confirmed the diagnosis of the Ebola virus disease in the patient," Chukwu told a press conference on Friday. "This result was corroborated by other laboratories outside Nigeria."

However, at a separate press conference held by the Lagos state government at the same time, the city's health commissioner, Jide Idris, said that they were only "assuming that it was Ebola" because they were "waiting for a confirmative test to double check" from a laboratory in Dakar.

Paul Garwood, spokesman for the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, said the U.N. health agency was also still waiting for test results.

"We're still waiting for laboratory-confirmed results as to whether he died of Ebola or not," he said.

It could not be immediately determined why there was a contradiction in the comments from central government and city officials.

If confirmed, the man would be the first case on record of one of the world's deadliest diseases in Nigeria, Africa's biggest economy and with 170 million people, its most populous country. Ebola has killed 660 people across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since it was first diagnosed in February.

Sawyer was quarantined on arrival and had not entered the city, a Nigerian official told Reuters.

"While he was quarantined he passed away. Everyone who has had contact with him has been quarantined," the official said.

Liberia's finance minister Amara Konneh said Sawyer was a consultant for the country's finance ministry.

"Our understanding is that the cause of death was Ebola," Konneh told Reuters.

The victim's sister had died of the virus three weeks previously, and the degree of contact between the two was being investigated by Liberian health ministry officials, he said.

Earlier on Friday, WHO spokesman Paul Garwood said: "I understand that he was vomiting and he then turned himself over basically, he made it known that he wasn't feeling well. Nigerian health authorities took him and put him in isolation."

Nigeria has some of the continent's least adequate healthcare infrastructure, despite access to billions of dollars of oil money as Africa's biggest producer of crude.

Some officials think the disease is easier to contain in cities than in remote rural areas.

"The fear of spread within a dense population would be offset by better healthcare and a willingness to use it, easier contact tracing and, I assume for an urban population, less risky funerary and family rites," Ian Jones, a professor of virology at the University of Reading in Britain, said.

"It would be contained more easily than in rural populations."

There have been 1,093 Ebola cases to date in West Africa's first outbreak, including the 660 who have died, according to the WHO. Governor Says Immigrant Children Could Have Measles, But That Claim's Been Disputed

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett (R) gave an interview to KDKA NewsRadio in Pittsburgh on Friday and reignited the suggestion that immigrant children crossing the Mexican border into the U.S. carry diseases with them.

"We also are concerned about their health and, and what they may not cause in health issues in the state of Pennsylvania. From my standpoint where they're coming in, there are certainly enough military bases in Texas and Arizona that the federal government could at least house them in there temporarily to make sure before they even send them to any state, that their health conditions are okay for that. That they've had all their immunizations and so forth because we have a strong concern on that," Corbett told interviewer John Shumway.

Artist Transforms His Childhood Doodles Into Mesmerizing Grown-Up Masterpieces

Even the most imaginative of adult artists can't compete with some of the effortless and strangely brilliant doodles of a child. Admit it, no matter how many art classes you take, it's hard to capture the wild imagination and unbridled confidence that come so easily with youth. Most often the doodles of magical creatures, wild beasts and illogical shapes that filled many a child notebook are sadly lost to time or buried in the murky depths of your parents garage.

12 Perfect Edgar Degas Quotes To Help Unlock Your Inner Artist

On one July 19, 180 years ago this Saturday, a man named Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas was born in Paris, France. You may know him better as Edgar Degas, and you may know him best for his dreamy paintings behind the scenes of the ballet.

Ballet is an art form that privileges all things perfect and pristine, but Degas took inspiration from the dance's sloppy moments i between -- every hunched back, sullied slipper, slumped posture and awkward stretch. Degas took his fascination with the beauty of ugliness outside the ballet studio as well, rendering cabaret singers and circus performers as something monstrous. Not to mention that "L'Absinthe" painting; it doesn't get much darker than that.

Rory McIlroy Builds On Open Lead Thanks To 'Inner Peace' (VIDEO)

HOYLAKE, England (AP) ? Rory McIlroy only saw birdies at Royal Liverpool, mostly on his scorecard, and even one pheasant that trotted across the eighth green as he was lining up a putt. That was but a minor interruption in his command performance Friday in the British Open.

Once he made a birdie, and then another, nothing could stop McIlroy.

Utah Gay Marriage Ban Shut Down By Appeals Court

SALT LAKE CITY, July 11 (Reuters) - A federal circuit court on Friday denied Utah's bid to further block legal recognition of about 1,300 same-sex weddings performed after the state's gay marriage ban was briefly lifted.

But the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, based in Denver, also left intact an existing temporary stay against the enforcement of state recognition of those 1,300 marriages to give Utah a chance to seek a permanent injunction from the Supreme Court. Utah's attorney general immediately vowed to do just that. (Reporting by Jennifer Dobner in Salt Lake City; Editing by Steve Gorman and Sandra Maler)

Was Dietrich Bonhoeffer Gay? Charles Marsh Biography Raises Questions

NEW YORK (RNS) A new biography is raising questions about the life and relationships of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, an anti-Nazi dissident whose theological writings remain widely influential among Christians.

Both left-leaning and right-leaning Christians herald the life and writings of Bonhoeffer, who was hanged for his involvement in the unsuccessful plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1944. Bonhoeffer was engaged to a woman at the time of his execution, observing that he had lived a full life even though he would die a virgin.

Supreme Court Grants Utah's Appeal To Stay Gay Marriage Court Order

July 18 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday agreed to a request from Utah for an emergency stay of an appeals court order that told the state to recognize hundreds of same-sex marriages performed there pending an appeal.

The appeal for a stay by Utah's attorney general had been widely expected since the 10th Circuit appeals court left intact an existing temporary stay in order to give the state time to seek a lengthier injunction from a higher court. (Reporting by Daniel Wallis in Denver; Editing by Eric Beech)

How China's Most Famous Grounded Artist Collaborated With A Navajo Man Thousands Of Miles Away

The idea was to raise the profile of a small Navajo art festival by roping in Ai Weiwei, the fiery Chinese dissident artist. And that's precisely what's happened. Suddenly, Navajo TIME, an annual festival that takes place deep in the desert in the American Southwest, is making headlines. Of the ten works commissioned by the state arts agency of New Mexico, the one that's causing all the fuss is Pull of the Moon, an international collaboration between Ai -- who remains captive in China since running afoul of the government a few years ago -- and Bert Benally, a Navajo artist you've probably never heard of.

Don't Worry, The World Cup Isn't The Only Place You Can See Diving

It doesn't matter what the sport is, there will likely be some flopping. And with the world's most popular sport being played on the world's biggest stage, the art of the flop (or dive) has been on full display.

While flopping tends to drive most sports fans (and some commentators) insane, some of the biggest athletes in the world continue to embellish contact or exaggerate an injury to gain an advantage. The NBA got so fed up with it that it created an anti-flopping policy, but fining players thousands of dollars hasn't seemed to dissuade some of them from flopping. It's no secret that flopping has been prevalent in soccer for a while, to the point where it has basically become an accepted part of the game (even though soccer fans around the world disapprove).

California Lawmakers Pledge To Work On A Drought Plan During The Summer

By Sharon Bernstein

SACRAMENTO, Calif., July 3 (Reuters) - California lawmakers on Thursday pledged to work over the summer recess to agree on a plan to shore up the state's water supply that has been mired in party politics for months despite a three-year drought that has slammed farms and towns.

The plan to build three new reservoirs, underground water storage and finance environmental clean-up projects ran aground last month after Republicans said it did not do enough to bring water to the state's parched agricultural breadbasket, and Governor Jerry Brown said it was too expensive.

"We will be working during the summer," said state senator Darrell Steinberg, the Democratic leader, after the legislature adjourned for its month-long recess. "We intend to come back in August and do our very best" to come to an agreement.

The plan, meant to help the drought-parched state prepare for future dry periods, must win the support of two-thirds of the state legislature and Brown before it can go before voters in November.

Lawmakers have already missed one deadline to get an agreement on the ballot, and if they delay beyond Aug. 11 it could cost the state millions in additional printing costs for ballot materials.

An earlier measure, passed in 2009 under then-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, is already slated to go on the ballot in November, but at $11 billion, it is viewed by many as too expensive and unlikely to pass.

Democrats dominate politics in the most populous U.S. state, but in the senate lack two votes for the two-thirds majority needed to place the measure on the ballot. That means they need Republican support.

But Peter DeMarco, spokesman for senate Republican leader Bobb Huff, said Republicans had not been consulted about the latest version of the bond or shown the final wording.

At issue is a massive and controversial plan to dig tunnels to carry water from rivers north of the fragile San Joaquin-Sacramento River Delta to farms and communities in the southern part of the state.

Democrats say using the bonds to fund a pre-cursor project to the tunnel proposal would be a poison pill for voters, re-igniting the state's water wars and harming the delta, which provides water for 25 million Californians.

Republicans say that without a way to convey water south, the projects will not help farmers, and they will not support it. (Reporting by Sharon Bernstein; editing by Andrew Hay)

Live a Life That Matters

2014-07-11-im227.jpg

When I watched the sunrise during my morning jog, I realized something. A smile came to my face because I realized that I'm alive, healthy and it has officially been ten years since my near fatal car accident. With every stride that I made, I reflected on the experiences that I had in the hospital, the operations that kept me alive, the blood donations that kept life running through my veins and the healthcare team that brought me back to life and then helped me get back on my feet. I thought about the love from my family and friends, and the incredible support that I've received over the years. Ten years is a long time, but the memories feel so vivid as if it were only yesterday that I was still in room 19 of the ICU.

National Hunt For Illinois Man Suspected Of 2 Slayings

July 3 (Reuters) - Authorities released new pictures on Thursday in a national hunt for an Illinois man suspected of killing a woman at a rest stop west of Chicago and taking her car a day after killing a man in the northern part of the state.

Terence Doddy, 36, is a person of interest in the killing of Todd Hansmeier, 37, on Monday in Rockford, Illinois, and Tonya Bargman, 44, at a rest stop on Interstate 39 about 40 miles (64 km) south of Rockford on Tuesday night, Illinois State Police said.

Police on Thursday released a surveillance photograph of Doddy, who lives in Rockford, exiting a Rockford-area store with several items in a shopping cart. They did not identify the store or say what date or time the image was captured.

State police said Doddy also might have a blue dome-style tent and urged the public to take precautions when visiting rest stops, campgrounds and other outdoor areas.

Police have said surveillance video showed Bargman being attacked by a male as she exited a restroom at the Willow Creek rest stop on I-39. She was found by a rest stop attendant.

Doddy was seen leaving the rest stop in Bargman's gray 2013 Nissan Altima, which bears the Illinois license plates BARGMN 2, police said. The car also has a silver colored "Illini Nissan" decal at the lower rear bumper, police said. (Reporting by David Bailey in Minneapolis; Editing by Sandra Maler)

As the sport went prime-time and grew more competitive and lucrative, the crackdown on doping cheats also intensified ? leading to the eventual dethroning of seven-time champ Lance Armstrong, the most famous rider of a tainted era.

Rescuers Free Trapped Honduran Miners, Several Still Missing

By Jorge Cabrera

SAN JUAN ARRIBA, Honduras, July 4 (Reuters) - Rescuers on Friday freed three miners who had been trapped by a landslide at an illegal gold mine in southern Honduras, but eight more remained unaccounted for as the search moved into its second day.

The workers were trapped when the entrance to the mine in San Juan Arriba collapsed on Wednesday. Officials said the mine, 70 miles (110 km) south of the Central American nation's capital Tegucigalpa, had been ordered to close a few months ago because it was unsafe.

"We've rescued three of the miners, thank God, and we're going to keep looking for the other eight," Moises Alvarado, a senior emergency services official, told reporters.

The three miners were whisked away in ambulances. Oscar Cruz, a spokesman for El Salvador's Green Cross, which came to help with the search effort, said the men were dehydrated and one had a broken right leg.

Hopes of a major breakthrough had surged on Wednesday night when Honduran President Juan Hernandez sent a tweet from the scene, saying that eight of the miners had been freed. However, shortly afterwards he deleted the tweet and apologized for reporting false news.

The collapse occurred in a drought-stricken region of Honduras that had been a gold mining center for Spanish colonists. The rise in gold prices in recent years had spurred dozens of small mines to open in the area. 24/7 Wall St.: In recent years, Americans have increasingly moved away from beer consumption in favor of wines and spirits. U.S. beer consumption fell slightly from 28.3 gallons per drinking-aged adult in 2012 to 27.6 gallons last year.

Despite declining across the United States overall, beer consumption remains quite high in some states. According to a recent study from Beer Marketer?s Insights, a brewing industry trade publisher, North Dakota residents consumed 43.3 gallons of beer per drinking-age adult in 2013, the most of any state. This was more than double the 19.6 gallons per legal age adult consumed in Utah, which drank the least beer. Based on figures from Beer Marketer?s Insights, these are the states that drink the most beer.

Indie Bookstore Rehires Workers It Fired For Supporting The Union

The owners of an independent bookstore in New York City have rehired four workers who were fired shortly after they voted in favor of union representation.

As HuffPost reported Wednesday, the Morningside Heights shop Book Culture recently canned a group of workers who had backed an organizing drive by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. The union won an election with near-unanimous support from store employees on June 24. Five workers were soon let go, and a Book Culture co-owner explained in a staff email that at least two were fired due to their union support.

Roger Federer Back In Wimbledon Final Looking For Historic Eighth Championship

LONDON (AP) ? Roger Federer was on the decline ? or so the thinking went.

He was past 30. Had back problems. Tried experimenting with a larger racket. Was a family man, a father to two sets of twins now. Slid down the rankings. Reached zero Grand Slam finals over the past two years. Started losing before the quarterfinals at majors, including in 2013's second round at the All England Club, of all places, to a guy ranked 116th.

Indiana Gay Marriage Ruling Put On Hold By Federal Appeals Court

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A federal appeals court on Friday put on hold a judge's order striking down Indiana's gay marriage ban, bringing same-sex marriages to a halt and leaving those who've already tied the knot in legal limbo.

The U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago issued the order two days after U.S. District Judge Richard Young had ruled that Indiana's prohibition on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. The decision came shortly after Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller, tired of waiting for Young to rule, appealed to the 7th Circuit.

Republican Senate Hopeful Bill Cassidy's Teenage Daughter Is Pregnant: Report

NEW ORLEANS, July 3 (Reuters) - A Louisiana Republican seeking to unseat Democratic U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu announced on Thursday that his unwed teenaged daughter is pregnant, a local newspaper reported.

Bill Cassidy, a U.S. congressman and medical doctor, is challenging Landrieu, a three-term incumbent, in a race that Republicans view as important in their quest to reclaim the U.S. Senate from Democrats.

"Earlier this year, Laura and I learned we will become grandparents this summer," Cassidy said in a statement provided to the Times-Picayune of New Orleans. "Our daughter now faces a more challenging future than her peers. She has our unconditional love and support."

The Cassidy campaign did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment. (Reporting by Jonathan Kaminsky; Editing by Sandra Maler)

Neymar Out Of World Cup With Fractured Vertebrae (VIDEO)

Brazil's win over Colombia came at a high cost: Neymar. The superstar playmaker suffered a fractured vertebra and will miss the remainder of the 2014 World Cup, according to Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar.

The injury occurred in the 87th minute of the quarterfinal clash at Estadio Castelao in Fortaleza on Friday when Colombia's Juan Camilo Zuniga drove his right knee into Neymar's lower back while leaping to attempt to head the ball. The Brazil forward dropped to the field in pain after the contact. The 22-year-old star was soon loaded onto a stretcher and taken immediately down the tunnel away from the field.
